Open Question: I'm moving to LA, how will I fare with these criteria:?

30 July 2010, 9:38 am

I have 6 years experience waiting tables, 3 in fine dining at a hotel and a family owned restaurant. I have worked in a multitude of ethnic restaurants. I prefer cafe serving though. I have great references. What's the server min. wage in California? And how do you think I'll potentially fare in the industry? I am planning on attending school but not until next year. So I will have plenty of time to work and get my stuff in order in a new city. Meantime, I paint and am wondering if it's terribly difficult to get my artwork out there. I was thinking if I held art shows wherever I end up living, and post fliers to advertise or whatever. Also, where would be a good area for me to live? I ride my bike a lot so my expenses aren't too high. I'll only have to worry about rent and phone bill, presumably. I'd like to be in an area where I can work at a good restaurant, or commute up to ten miles (on my bicycle) to work if I have to. Based on this info, what do you think? Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated. Thanks! 1. I prefer answers from people who actually live in LA, or have lived there. Just some info that might help in answering the question: I am 25 years old. I am pretty good looking. I've never, no matter where I've gone, had trouble finding employment. Yes, I realize that doesn't mean a lot but it's something. I am moving to LA a year in advance before continuing school because I want to qualify for resident tuition. I don't intend to live in anything larger than a studio. I ride my bike 10-20 miles a day. I don't need a ton of money to live on. And I don't mind having roommates. I hope this helps. Thanks for the answers so far!... Read More »
